Stevenson, in the first paragraph, creates images of horror and how the story is based on real people called Burke and Hare, who were grave robbers in Edinburgh in 1829. The story was gripping for start to finish; it was based in an inn near London. The inn was called The George. There were storytellers, and the inn only had old oil lamps. This gave the start of the story; a sense of horror, the lamps and the storytellers allows us to know that this was an old fashioned inn. This gave the opening scene a sense of horror and builds tension on what Fettes says: Have you seen it again? This allows the reader to question what it is. R. L. Stevenson writes the story so that the beginning is at the end of the story. He writes the story so that the storyteller tells he story like the narrator is a watcher over Fettes and Macfarlane and also a listener in the inn. Fettes was a student at a medical school of Anatomy in Edinburgh. Macfarlane was another student in the same medical school. When Fettes hears that Macfarlane is in the inn, Fettes jumps up in shook. Fettes became instantly sober: his eyes awoke. The reader now knows the Fettes and Macfarlane have history between them. The twist to the story is that Fettes and Macfarlane are like Burke and Hare, they wanted bodies for their anatomy class, so they started to dig up bodies from graves and Fettes realises that Macfarlane was having people murdered an Fettes realises because someone who he was talking to the day before, was murdered and taken to his house. Fettes was terrified of Macfarlane and went along with all his plans. The day after in the class, Fettes watched over the other students after knowing the person was and how she ended up in the anatomy class. Jane Gailbrath? Was she murdered? Fettes quizzed himself all through the class. After this, Fettess mood changed, from a pleasant medical student to couldnt careless student. This links with the twist to build tension and create realism. Macfarlane is the second biggest character; his mood throughout the story is evil and demented. He uses Fettes to get bodies for Dr K the medical teacher. The last section of the story is focused on the countryside and how much Fettes and Macfarlane are to Burke and Hare. In this section, Stevenson uses many quotes to describe the mysterious and scary settings: there was no sound but that of their own passage, and the incessant, strident pouring of the rain. It was pitch dark The graveyard was the most dramatic scene throughout the story, here is where Stevenson builds incredible tension. The light breaking gave the setting total blackness and no sounds. When they had got the body they transported it in their van and the body was bouncing from side to side, the gig, flopping from side-to-side. This gave this scene horror an tension. This tells the reader that Fettes and Macfarlane dont care about murdering people, but they also steal graves, like Burke and Hare. The twist at the end of the story is that the person that they have dug up is their friend Gray who was with Fettes and Macfarlane, at the start of the story. Long dissected Gray This is a horror by R. L. Stevenson which wont be forgotten. The Body Snatcher and like other well know horror stories such as Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde and Dracula gives horror and suspence and builds tension all through the story, also creating realism and reflecting on real people, such as Burke and Hare. Stevensons choice of language and imagery also gave the story, horror and tension. The story gives off lots and easy to read language for the younger reader to the older reader. The twist is that the end of the story describes the changes of the characters, all reflecting on how Stevenson creates horror and builds tension.

The Monroe doctrine helped the United States set up puppet nations in Central and South America who were loyal to United States business and political interest. From the Monroe Doctrine many Central American and Southern American countries gained their independence from Spanish rule; the doctrine stated that any European nation that tried to force its rule upon the rebelling central and southern American nations would also have to face United States intervention. Hamlet vs All My Sons Essay

There have been many women in history who are known today by their different characteristics. For example Beverly Allitt, known as the â€Å"Angel of Death† a pediatric nurse who killed 4 children and injured 5. Queen Victoria supported an act of parliament 1938 which abolished slavery in the colonies of the British Empire. This goes to show that although people may think women are all alike, they are most definitely not. Kate Keller of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons and Gertrude of Shakespeare’s Hamlet are both very different characters who share but very few similarities throughout the two plays. Ones knowing of their partner’s crime committed, one’s action of lying, and their different levels of intelligence, all prove that the two women are both different. Incorporated in both Hamlet and All My Sons, are mysteries. In Hamlet of course, is the mystery of Hamlet’s father’s death. Who murdered him? Claudius, we know. However Gertrude did not know. There is no evidence that she had any idea of it, although Hamlet does accuse her, at one event in the play, of knowing that Claudius is a killer. Whereas Kate from All My Sons knows everything about what her husband Joe, has done. She knows he is guilty of the deaths of the pilots. It is evident from the beginning of the play that Kate is in fact guilty of something. When Ann shows up, her behaviour towards her is strange, and of course, she acts this way because she is afraid that Ann may know something that will bring the truth out. She will not let go of the possibility that Larry is alive, which brings in foreshadows. For example when she says to Joe, â€Å"You above all have got to believe, you†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (1.309-312) Ann’s brother George goes by the house shortly after Ann arrives. He had just visited their father in prison, and has come full of rage. Kate notices, and quickly lures him in with her charm, and motherly characteristics to make him almost forget why he was angry, to protect her and Joe from the secret they have been keeping. This is a big factor which differentiates the two characters, Gertrude and Kate. One knew of the crime committed, and the other did not. Kate from All My Sons seems to be a very clever woman. In fact, she is extremely intelligent. She is aware of everything that could go wrong. She is very careful in what she says and does, and she knows how to handle any bump in the road. She does so, throughout the play, like when Ann’s brother George arrives. However, her being intelligent does not make her a very rational character. 3 years after the disappearance of her son Larry, she still hopes to believe he is alive. She clings to that idea. She believes in any given â€Å"sign† or superstition. Like for example the whole situation of the horoscope. Gertrude from Hamlet is less intelligent. She is more ignorant. She is taken in by Claudius’ looks and charisma, and quickly marries him. You would think she must have known about Claudius being her husband’s murderer, jumping in to a marriage with her brother in-law so quickly. However, she knows nothing. It was no act of mischievousness, only an act of ignorance, showing she may not have even loved Hamlet’s father at all, or very little. Hamlet also acts strange around Gertrude. He is disgusted by his mother’s actions. Gertrude does not have a clue as to why he acts that way, until he tells her. Only then does she realize her actions were been wrong. Kate is a woman known to have a large capacity for love. She loves her family, evidently. She does however have an even larger capacity for lying. She knows that Joe sent out the cracked cylinder heads out, and caused the death of several pilots. She and Joe both keep the secret. She hopes and prays that her son Larry is still alive to not have to deal with the fact that his own father was the cause of his death. She states, â€Å"As long as you live that boy will be alive, that boy is alive. God does not let a son be killed by his father.† Gertrude on the other hand does not lie the way Kate does. Yes, she does lie to herself about the possible consequences of her poor actions, but I wouldn’t see it as particularly lying, I see it more as ignorance. Simply, she is refusing to believe the truth. Therefore, Kate Keller is a liar, while Gertrude is not. You may say that both Kate and Gertrude share the same motherly characteristics. They both have strong connections with their sons. Nevertheless, Kate seems to have a more genuine love for her son. Gertrude is more selfish. She hurries in to a marriage soon after Hamlet’s father dies, and does not think of the harm it will do to her son. Kate, although she does lie, shows that she genuinely loves her sons, and that she always wants the best for Chris. It is clear that Gertrude of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Kate Keller of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons are two very different characters. Gertrude is innocent, in not knowing the crime Claudius has committed, where Kate Keller does know the crime her husband has committed. Both women have different characteristics. 1310 10/17/12 War War is inevitable when disasters exist, but can sometimes be avoidable when conflicting over cultural matters. Primarily, it is in man’s best interest to provide for himself and his family. Those are his two biggest priorities. When any kind of disaster occurs, he must first look after himself and his family before ensuring the safety of others. A civilization works in the same way. Its goal is to carry out the way of life of the people and ensure that it survives. It will fail to reach that goal if the people in the civilization aren’t willing to fight for themselves and what they believe in.If some kind of natural calamity strikes or an outside power that is willing to kill moves in and violently forces its own laws, traditions, and customs, the people must take appropriate actions or face the downfall of their own kind. They must fight to preserve their customs and traditions, or move to another place to live. Now if the intruding invader has any co ncern for the people, but still desires to enforce their laws upon them, non-violence can be used. Non-violence can only be an alternative to war if the force they are fighting against is non-violent.Otherwise, it will only get trampled upon by a violent, oppressive force. In order for a civilization to survive, it must have an adequate supply of resources for its people. A civilization’s supply of resources can easily be depleted by drought, famine, floods, disease and many other natural disasters. When this happens, the civilization must find a way to solve this problem. If a solution can’t be found while staying in the area, they must find another place to live, but that comes with risks. Going out and searching for a new place is very dangerous and many people may die.Another option the impoverished group of people might take would be to seek help to a nearby but separate establishment. This puts the struggling group in the hands of the healthy one. It is then up t o the healthy group to decide if they are going to share their resources or deny it to them. The denial of aide will displease the struggling group and they might have to turn to violence to protect their people. This is because no compromise can be made and both groups are looking out for themselves. Humanity’s natural instinct o survive is the primary reason why violent wars are inevitable. As I have mentioned before, a civilization’s goal is to do anything they can to ensure the prominence and survival of their culture. The Crusades of the middle-ages are a perfect example of acting out on this cultural pride. In 1071, the Catholic Church had previously lost access of the Holy Lands to the Turks. They make a comeback in 1095, at the main series of the Crusades. A lot of conflict and fighting occurred at this time and lasted until 1291.Due to the reason they were fighting, war could have easily been avoidable. The Christians and the Muslims weren’t necessarily fighting for resources, but for the right to own the Holy Lands. The reason both religions wanted it was because both had ties to it. Since they weren’t fighting for resources, they should have been able to share the land without bloodshed. Both should have been able to exist with each other without conflict. Non-violence can be an alternative to war, but only if the people’s lives are a factor in the opposing force’s power.When the British were controlling their colonies in India, they were imposing taxes and trade. The British were using India for its own economic benefits. If the British started killing off the Indians, then there wouldn’t be anybody to pay them their taxes, not to mention it could start a war neither party could afford or want. Even if the British decided to get violent against the resistance, non-violence would have still been effective. This is because the British would use violence to induce fear, but at a cost.Since the British e conomy is dependent on the population of the people, they would actually damage themselves if they were to kill. When people are faced with the options to either fight or die because of competition over resources, they will chose to fight and war will occur. Some wars and conflicts in the past could have been avoided because both parties were intolerant of each other but wanted the same land. In this case, conflict should never have happened, and compromise should have been the solution.
